Diwali symbolizes the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.” Diwali is the largest community festival and celebration of culture & heritage. Lasting five days and celebrated during the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika (Oct-Nov).
Diwali is celebrated worldwide by Sikhs, Punjabis, Gujaratis, Jains, Buddhists, Tamils, Nepalis, Sri Lankans, and East Indians. Diwali is celebrated to mark the homecoming of Lord Rama after his jubilant victory over demons.
It is with great pleasure that I welcome everyone to Diwali RazzMatazz in celebration of Diwali, 2020 hosted by Indo Canada Arts Council. Diwali brings together family and friends across Canada and around the world to celebrate the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and light over darkness.
I want to extend warm greetings to our Indo Canadian community as you celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Diwali is one of the biggest Indian festivals, celebrated around the world with lamps, fireworks, colourful clothing and community festivities. It celebrates the power of goodness, hope, prosperity, and enlightenment.
I know that this has been a challenging year for our religious and cultural communities, but I’m continually inspired by the way you’ve innovated and re-imagined age-old festivals to find ways to stay connected with your community. While this year’s celebration looks a lot different due to COVID-19, I know it’s just as meaningful.
Thanks to the amazing team at Indo-Canada Arts Council for the energy and creativity they brought to this virtual celebration. This festival is an excellent opportunity to bring the community together to celebrate their shared heritage and their many contributions to this great province.
Let me recognize the active members of the Indo-Canada Arts Council for organizing this celebration of music, dance, the performing arts, culture and cuisine. Diwali is one of the many opportunities where we in Mississauga, & communities across Canada, can celebrate the diverse cultures, faiths, and shared values that flourish throughout our City.
